Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
